Nothing says the holidays like a cup of eggnog, between it´s creamy texture and sublime flavor, it´s certainly one of the best co*cktails this time of year. This Homemade Eggnog Recipe with Spanish Brandy is easy to make, has an amazing flavor and offers that beautiful and classic creamy texture. I cooked my eggs to make this eggnog, so no worries for any salmonella here folks + I also used oat milk instead of regular milk, so this eggnog is dairy free as well. After trying this eggnog, you will never buy store-bought again 🙂 .

– Does it Matter what Brandy I use? –

This is a question everyone always asks me. In all truth, yes it does matter, If you buy the cheapest stuff in the market, your eggnog will taste cheap, plus cheap liquor tends to give you a headache. Hey, I´m not saying go out and buy a $50 bottle of Spanish brandy, but get something in the middle, I used a brand called Magno, which cost about 11€ here in Spain and around $15-$20 in the states. This is the perfect brandy for this eggnog. Watch the video below on How to Make this Homemade Eggnog Recipe with Spanish Brandy or check out the recipe card below, which you can print. Salud!

Author Albert Bevia @ Spain on a Fork

Ingredients

  • 2cupsoat milk
  • 1cupheavy oat cream
  • 2cloves
  • 1cinnamon stick
  • 1vanilla bean
  • 4lemon peels
  • 5organic egg yolks
  • 1/3cupwhite sugar
  • 1cupSpanish brandy
  • cinnamon powder to garnish

Instructions

  1. Add 2 cups of oat milk into a sauce pan, along with 1 cup of heavy oat cream, 4 lemon peels, 1 vanilla bean cut in half, 1 cinnamon stick and 2 cloves, heat with a medium heat and mix together, once it comes to a light boil turn off the heat and let it infuse

  2. Seperate 5 organic egg yolks into a large bowl (discard the egg whites), whisk the egg yolks together, then add 1/3 cup of white sugar and whisk with the eggs until well combined, then start slowly pouring in the infused milk into the egg mixture whilecontinuously whisking, do this until all the milk has been incorporated to the egg mixture

  3. Add the mixture back into the sauce pan and heat with a medium heat, mix the mixturecontinuously without stopping so the eggs won´t cook, after 5 to 6 minutes of cooking and you can wipe clean the mixture on the back of a wooden spoon, turn off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes

  4. Transfer the mixture into a pitcher through a sieve, add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of Spanish brandy into the eggnog and mix together, cover with seran wrap and add to the fridge for at least 4 hours

  5. When ready to serve, mix the eggnog in the pitcher and pour into small tall glasses, garnish with a kiss of cinnamon powder, enjoy!

FAQs

How much brandy to put in eggnog? ›

For each 8-ounce glass, add one shot (1.5 ounces) of alcohol. If you're mixing up a larger quantity in a pitcher of punch bowl, stir together a one-quart carton of eggnog with about four-and-a-half shots, or a half-gallon carton with about none shots.

What are the ingredients in eggnog? ›

A traditional holiday drink dating back hundreds of years, eggnog is made with eggs (hence the name), milk, cream, spices like nutmeg and vanilla, and fortified with rum, whisky, and/or brandy.

What is the very best alcohol to put in eggnog? ›

While brandy is the most traditional alcohol to pair with eggnog, according to traditional recipes, you can also use a mixture of dark rum and Cognac. If you like your eggnog with more of a kick you can also add bourbon, but we recommend sticking to rum and Cognac to preserve the 'nog's flavors.

Why is my homemade eggnog so thick? ›

The distinct flavors of egg, cream, and liquor meld together even after just a day or two in the fridge, making a smoother, more balanced cup of nog. The proteins in the eggs also start to thicken, giving eggnog its signature spoon-coating thickness.

What brand of brandy is good for eggnog? ›

For the brandy eggnog, Korbel VS was the brand of choice, and it produced a perfectly balanced drink. This eggnog had a nice sweetness in every sip, which paired admirably with the creamy egg base.

How much brandy should you pour? ›

As a general rule, shots of liquor are 1 ½ ounces, while a “neat” pour (a spirit served solo in a tumbler) is slightly larger at two ounces. This two-ounce pour also applies to most single-spirit drinks ordered “on the rocks” (with ice) or “up” (stirred with ice to chill and dilute, then strained).

How long does homemade eggnog last? ›

A fresh batch of eggnog can mature for months, or even years. And some say that's a good thing.

What country did eggnog originate from? ›

It is first attested in medieval England in the 14th century. Although the treat originated in Britain, the term eggnog first appeared in Britain's North American colonies—soon to be the United States—in 1775.

How much alcohol does eggnog have? ›

A concentration of at least 20% of alcohol (about the same amounts of alcoholic spirits and milk or cream), and refrigeration are recommended for safety.

Is Crown Royal good in eggnog? ›

Egg-cellent Eggnog Tips

Rum – I like dark rum in eggnog (Myers's is what I usually buy), but spiced rum would also be fabulous. Whiskey – I typically use Crown Royal, but use what you like or keep on hand.

What do you call eggnog with alcohol? ›

Rumchata Eggnog is an alcoholic beverage made with eggnog and RumChata® served in a glass with a cinnamon-sugar rim. It's the perfect co*cktail to serve at your Christmas and New Year's Eve parties! And, I even have copycat Rumchata and homemade eggnog you can use in the drink.

What is the best rum for eggnog? ›

Chairman's Reserve Spiced Rum

"When choosing a rum, I personally find a spiced rum to be the best for the flavors incorporated in eggnogs," he said. "Chairman's Reserve Spiced Rum is best for its quality and flavor profile.”

What makes eggnog unhealthy? ›

Traditionally made with eggs, cream, milk, and sugar, no one would say that eggnog is a healthy drink. Even a small serving can pack significant amounts of calories, fat, saturated fat, and added sugars. And then there's the fact that homemade eggnog made with raw eggs can be a food-poisoning risk.

What makes eggnog taste better? ›

Add a splash of vanilla or almond extract, or turn your eggnog into an iced eggnog latte by pouring a shot of espresso into the shaker. Either way, you'll feel the spirit of the holidays!

Why did my homemade eggnog curdle? ›

Make sure you whisk it while pouring the hot milk, if not the egg will get curdled. Once both mixes are fully mixed in, add that whole mixture into a clean pot and keep it on a low fire while whisking so the eggs don't get curdled until thick.

What is the alcohol volume of eggnog? ›

A concentration of at least 20% of alcohol (about the same amounts of alcoholic spirits and milk or cream), and refrigeration are recommended for safety.

How do you add liquor to store bought eggnog? ›

The golden ratio for this little holiday cheer is 1 to 5. Just to be clear, that's 1 part booze to 5 parts eggnog (definitely not the other way around). And once you've mixed it all up, ensure you serve it with flair. Top each glass with a dash of freshly grated nutmeg and maybe a cinnamon stick for added flavour.

How do you dilute alcohol in eggnog? ›

Because the eggnog thickens the longer you keep it stored in your refrigerator (and it's quite boozy), you can always dilute it by adding more milk just before serving.

Does eggnog with brandy go bad? ›

Bottled eggnog with alcohol can have a varying shelf life depending on whether it is unopened or opened. Here is some information based on the search results: Unopened bottled eggnog with alcohol: Unopened, shelf-stable bottled eggnog that contains alcohol can last up to 18 months without refrigeration [1].
