COMMENT: Each party can chalk up a conviction (2024)

The score is now even.

The Democrats 1, the Republicans 1.

Last week a Delaware jury found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony counts of lying about his drug use when purchasing a gun.

Two weeks ago, a Manhattan jury convicted Donald Trump on 34 counts of falsifying financial statements in an attempt to hide hush money payments made to a woman with whom he allegedly had a sexual encounter.

Anyone who believes that both of those convictions were not politically motivated is living in a dream world. Of course they were. That’s the way the political game in America is played these days — an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

COMMENT: Each party can chalk up a conviction (1)

NBC interviewed a juror in the Biden case who said politics played no part in the guilty verdict. Jurors in New York would probably say the same thing regarding Trump’s conviction.

People are also reading…

Both are likely telling the truth. They probably based their verdicts on the facts presented, which is what they are supposed to do.

The politics in these cases came not from the jury room but from the government’s decision to prosecute. Jurors are not always politically motivated, but prosecutors too often are. And to bring down a high-profile personality is a feather in any prosecutor’s cap and can often lead to higher office.

Not that Trump and Biden were not guilty of the charges; it is just that they were almost certainly selectively prosecuted. In a society weaned on illegal drugs, probably half the people who buy guns lie about being users.

Does the state prosecute them all, or even check into their backgrounds? No. If that happened, there would be more jails than schools in this country.

But Hunter Biden is the president’s son and Republicans have been trying to get Joe Biden since he defeated Trump in 2020. If you can’t get the man you want, going after his family is the next best thing. And with the presidential election less than five months away, what better time to obtain a conviction.

It was the same with Trump. No one really cared that the former president paid Stormy Daniels hush money and there is no proof that those payments had any effect whatsoever on the 2016 election. The hush money trial was merely a way to further discredit Trump in the months before the election.

It is sad that our country has come to this, that political parties use the legal system as a tool to bring down high-profile officials from the other party to gain a political advantage.

In the past month we have had both a former president and the son of a sitting president convicted of felony charges for the first time in this country’s history. That’s got to make us look great in the eyes of the world.

Then again, maybe we don’t care what the rest of the world thinks. Sometimes it seems that America has lost all its self-respect.

Will either of these two high-profile convictions have any effect on the upcoming presidential election? Probably not. Most voters in America knew how they would mark a ballot months or even years ago.

And if Trump won any sympathy votes following his conviction, that advantage will now be offset by those who feel sorry for Joe Biden.

Over the years I have covered dozens of trials and have watched witnesses and defendants get caught in lies that were obvious to everyone in the courtroom.

Of all that lying under oath, I know of no one who was ever prosecuted for perjury, which is essentially what Hunter Biden and Donald Trump were convicted of — lying. The liars in the lower cases were nobodies and there was no advantage to their prosecution.

Biden and Trump are big names, and their convictions could alter an election and maybe send the prosecutor to the governor’s office. And those convictions were wins for a political party.

Yes, when it comes to politics, we are a vindictive nation.

The question now becomes, who is next?
